The first meeting of Misterton W.I. was held in the Parish Room on the 19 October 1920 and, in 1921, a piece of land was purchased to erect a W.I. hut (ex-Army) which cost £36.10s 0d. During the war years, the hut was commissioned by the military authorities and was not handed back until 1945.

Monthly W.I. meetings continued in this establishment until 1968, when the original Wesleyan Chapel, which later became The Men’s Club, came up for sale and was subsequently purchased by the W.I. for the sum of £1,000. Tom Thomas (our then secretary Ann White’s father) donated a piece of adjoining land on which a new kitchen/toilet block, at a cost of £750 was added, and monthly meetings have been held there ever since.

Various updates/repairs and additions have been carried out in order to keep the hall “fit for purpose.”

Misterton W.I. is proud to be one of the few Women’s Institutes to own its own hall which is supported by continuous fundraising; it is also a valuable Community asset.

Misterton W.I. currently has 26 members. If you would like to come along to one of our meetings and find out more about us you will receive a warm welcome and there is no obligation to join.

Meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of every month starting at 7.15p.m. We have a speaker at most meetings who is chosen by the members each year. Some meetings take another format, i.e. garden party, picnic and sometimes just a general social evening with food provided by members.

We are involved in many village activities, such as the Annual Flower & Vegetable Show, Fete, Carol Singing, Bingo at Easter and Christmas, also jumble sales and table top sales, etc. All events are advertised in the Misterton Magazine, Western Gazette and free local press. We also arrange social outings for our members – and any villagers – to varied events, such as the theatre, boat trips, County Shows, National Trust Houses, shopping, etc.

We are members of the Group W.I. Skittles League and play at local pubs each month.

And did you know the Women’s Institute has its very own College? Denman College is based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and is in its own beautiful grounds and provides superior accommodation for residential courses. The College runs a miscellany of courses for its members, family and friends.

The Misterton W.I. also interacts with surrounding W.I’s and is often involved in Group W.I. activities and each year helps out at the Bath & West Show.

The Hall is hired out for various events – socials, meetings, family parties, dance/exercise groups, etc. It is well equipped with a fully functional kitchen. Please see back page for full details of hire, hall spec., etc.

We are a modern, forward thinking organisation for women, whose mission is to help the community, have a say in what goes on in the country/world and, last but not least, enjoy ourselves.

The current annual membership fee is £41 which includes the W.I. Life Magazine delivered to your door for 10 months of the year; we also have The County News and our own Newsletter both of which are distributed at our monthly meetings.
